During a regularly scheduled hearing Monday in Calloway County, two defendants charged in the death of an infrant last year asked for separate trials.

The Murray Sentinel reported Chyanne Niemeyer and Nathaniel Gibson asked for the separate trials in the death of  Niemeyer’s 17-month-old daughter, who died from severe burn injuries last October.  Gibson was identified as Niemeyer's finace' in the case.

According to the Murray Police Department's report ,Niemeyer and Gibson brought the girl to the emergency room of Murray-Calloway County Hospital after they found the infant unresponsive. Allegedly, both told Murray Police the burns resulted from hot bathwater.

Both claimed they tried to get the toddler out of the water but could not because of the temperature, but it was noted in the report neither Niemeyer nor Gibson had any redness on their hands or arms.

When it became evident to Niemeyer that her daughter’s skin was being profoundly damaged, she removed the girl from the tub and treated her wounds by applying an ointment designed to provide relief for muscle and joint pain, backaches and minor arthritis pain.  The police report also noted “strong medicine odor” coming from the child.

The couple were arrested that night and have remained in the Calloway County Detention Center, each on a $500,000 cash bond.

The hearings on the separate trial motions were continued until August 19th.
