Labor Day brings a break in the extreme heat, but more on tap this week

The high temperature at Barkley Airport peaked at 99 degrees on Saturday, as the extreme heat warning for the quad state expired Saturday evening.

But after some welcome relief on Labor Day, temperatures may approach 100 again on Tuesday and Wednesday.

A heat advisory is still in effect Sunday for southeast Missouri, northwest Tennessee and a corner of southwestern Kentucky where the heat index could still reach triple digits. However, conditions may improve through the afternoon as northeast winds bring cooler and less humid air into the area.

Labor Day will see highs only in the seasonal upper 80s to lower 90s, with very low humidity.

But, another warmup is expected Tuesday into Wednesday. The worst conditions are expected Wednesday wehn temperatures may once again approach 100 in southeast Missouri and southern Illinois. Heat indices could be in the low triple digits region wide.

Thursday through Saturday should bring highs down to the low 90s.
