Lyon County superintendent receives state award

The news superintendent of Lyon County Schools has received a state education award.

Miranda B. Reed received the 2026 Grissom Award for Innovation in Special Education during the Kentucky Board of Education’s meeting Thursday.  Reed was recognized for initiatives she implemented while serving as Lyon County’s director of special education.

Among them was a peer mentoring program that pairs general education students with students who have disabilities, allowing mentors to develop leadership skills and earn academic credit while promoting inclusion and social growth.

“This recognition reflects the dedication of an entire team committed to creating meaningful opportunities for students with disabilities,” said Reed, who took over as superintendent on July 1 following the retirement of Russ Tilford.

The annual Grissom Award honors Kentuckians and Kentucky organizations demonstrating leadership, commitment and service in improving achievement and educational equity for students with disabilities.
