A Massac County man was arrested after a high-speed pursuit early Saturday morning.

According to the Massac County Sheriff’s Office, an officer attempted to stop a pickup driven by 27-year-old Nicholas S. Shepler, but Shepler refused to stop and accelerated to speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour. During the pursuit, the vehicle’s headlights were reportedly turned off as it traveled near US 45 and Belgrade Road.

Shepler reportedly drove into two separate fields in an attempt to evade deputies. Shepler eventually abandoned the pickup and fled on foot, then entered an unoccupied residence where he attempted to hide in the attic. Shepler was located and taken into custody without further incident.

Shepler was arrested on a Massac County warrant for failure to appear related to criminal damage to property, as well as multiple felony warrants from McCracken County, including possession of methamphetamine and resisting arrest.

Additional charges were filed by the Metropolis Police Department, including aggravated fleeing and eluding, driving under the influence, resisting arrest, and other traffic offenses.

Shepler was lodged at the Massac County Detention Center.
