Metropolis Police reported seven arrests plus dozens of tickets in their July 4th Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over and Click It or Ticket safety initiatives.
Chief Harry Masse said his officers handed out 54 citations between the two programs in addition to another 22 warnings. Three drivers were arrested for being impaired. Four others were arrested on drug-related charges, and still two others were charged with driving on a suspended license.
The goal of the campaigns was to promote use of seatbelts and get drivers off the road who are impaired.
The department was one of over 200 law enforcement agencies across Illinois to participate in the highway safety programs. The Illinois State Police support both programs that are funded with federal highway dollars through the Illinois Department of Transportation.
