Paducah Police are investigating a fatal crash that occurred on Sunday morning along I-24.

The crash reportedly happened at about 4:42 a.m. Sunday, along the interstate near the Lone Oak Road interchange. Police got an automated alert indicating a crash near the 7-mile marker. About the same time, another caller reported a vehicle off the road near the 6.1-mile marker.

Officers found the vehicle well off the road and into a tree line. The driver, later identified as 79-year-old Philip Ames of Augusta, Georgia, was not conscious when they located him. CPR was performed before Ames was taken to a local hospital, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

Police said their investigation showed the vehicle had hit a guardrail before ending up in the trees.

Detectives with the Paducah Police Collision Reconstruction Unit are continuing their investigation.
