The Princeton City Council was presented this week with a proposal for a new Entertainment Destination District to boost downtown tourism.

Planning and Zoning Administrator Jenny Clark presented council members with a sample ordinance for the proposed Entertainment Destination Center to focus on economic development and support local businesses. The goal would be to attract new restaurants and extend evening business hours.

Since the state allowed them in 2016, at least 14 cities have implemented entertainment districts, including Paducah since 2021 and Hopkinsville, which opened in June.

If the Princeton council approves the measure, people will be able to carry alcoholic drinks outdoors within the district in specially provided cups. Only drinks bought within the EDC are allowed, and all state and local laws regarding public intoxication and disorderly conduct would be strictly enforced.

WPKY reported that the council did not discuss the proposal or take any action.
