Two people, including a child, are dead following a Tuesday afternoon traffic accident in Livingston County.

The Livingston County Sheriff's Office said around 2:20 pm, first responders were called to to the 1400 block of U.S. Highway 60 West in reference to a two-vehicle collision.

The preliminary investigation indicates that 28-year-old Lindsey Trail, of Ledbetter was otravelling westbound on US Highway 60 West. At the same time, 61-year-old Timothy Buford was operating an eastbound vehicle on U.S. Highway 60 West.

Evidence collected at the scene, along with eyewitness accounts, indicates that Trail's vehicle crossed the center line into the eastbound lane of travel, where it collided head-on with Buford's vehicle.  

Buford was pronouced  dead at the scene.  A 5-year-old male passenger in Trail's vehicle later succumbed to injuries after being airlifted to an out-of-state hospital.

Meanwhile, a deputy with the assistance of courageous bystanders, were able to extricate the children who were trapped inside the burning Trail vehicle.

Lindsey Trail and the remaining occupants of her vehicle—35-year-old Preston Blake of Ledbetter, a 7-year-old male, and a 3-year-old female—were also airlifted to out-of-state hospitals for treatment.

The collision remains under investigation
