The National Weather Service office in Paducah says this weekend's cooler atmospheric setup is favorable for a rather rare phenomenon.
Cold air funnels are weaker than tornadoes. They are usually brief and fleeting, and rarely reach the ground. If they do they typically cause very minor damage.
They can form beneath showers or weak thunderstorms when the air aloft is especially cold.
Cold air funnels are very difficult to detect on radar, so meteorologists depend on local residents and spotters to report their occurrence.
The weather service will usually issue a special weather statement highlighting the potential for their development.
If one is reported reaching the ground and causes any damage, a tornado warning will be issued.
Some thunderstorms this weekend may also contain small hail and gusty winds.
