Police arrested a teacher at Ballard Memorial High School on drug charges.

The Ballard County Sheriff's Office said April Jewell was arrested Thursday on charges of theft by unlawful taking or disposition of a controlled substance under $10,000 and possession of a controlled substance. The investigation reportedly began after a parent contacted law enforcement officials.

Jewell, who is a nursing instructor at the school, was taken into custody outside the district’s career and technical center after private questioning by law enforcement.

According to the arrest citation obtained by open records request, Jewell admitted to going to a home and taking 18 hydrocodone pills from a bottle on the kitchen table, as well as some nausea medication. Deputies reportedly found 17 of the pills in her possession.

"Our primary concern, today and every day, is the safety and well-being of our students. At this time, we have no reason to believe any of our students ever were in any danger. We appreciate the quick response and professionalism of the Ballard County Sheriff’s Department, and look forward to a full investigation of this matter. We will cooperate with authorities in any way we can to reach that resolution.” Said Ballard Superintendent Casey Allen in a press release.

The school's principal Leslee Davis emailed parents Thursday night, saying students who are working on certifications in Jewell's class will have the same access to their certifications, and will be able to finish all classes.

Jewell has been suspended from her position with pay.
