In the year-to-year comparison, Carlisle County recorded the lowest jobless rate in the Commonwealth at 5.4%. Hickman County and Lyon County also had lower rates at 6.5% and 6.7% respectively.
Crittenden County had a 7.5% unemployment rate during the month of May, also among the lowest in the state.
The unadjusted unemployment rate for the state was 10.9% in May, and 13% for the nation.
Rates for other western Kentucky counties include: Ballard 9.4%; Caldwell 8.5%; Calloway 8.0%; Fulton 8.2%; Graves 8.1%; Livingston 11.2%; McCracken 11.1%; Marshall 8.9%; and Trigg 10.0%.
By comparison, Magoffin County in eastern Kentucky recorded the state's highest unemployment rate at 20.5 percent.
Kentucky's county unemployment rates and employment levels are not seasonally adjusted because of small sample sizes. Employment statistics undergo sharp fluctuations due to seasonal events such as weather changes, harvests, holidays and school openings and closings.
