According to the Graves County Sheriff's Office, a resident recently received a check in the mail in the amount of $5,020. The resident was asked to place the check in his checking account, write a new check out of these funds and send that amount to a different address. The resident was also told to keep a certain amount of the check for his trouble and time.
According to deputies, anytime you are asked to perform a task such as this with a check you receive in the mail, it's a scam. The check that you receive will return on a closed account or with insufficient funds. By the time your bank is able to figure that out, the check you sent in has already been cashed.
Deputies say always be suspicious of anything that sounds too good to be true.
