The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory in effect from noon today until 9 o'clock tonight.

The advisory is for all of southern Illinois, and has now been extended to all counties of western Kentucky.

Rain will change over to snow by the time of the afternoon commute. Total snow accumulations of one to two inches is likely. Winds from the north could gust as high as 30 to 35 mph.

Snow accumulation may be higher on grassy and elevated surfaces, and lower on area roads because of warm ground temperatures. However slick spots may develop as temperatures rapidly fall.

Bitter, record or near record cold is forecast later tonight through Tuesday. Wind chill temperatures behind an arctic cold front will fall to near zero to 5 above by early Tuesday morning, due to strong north winds 10 to 20 mph and gusty, with lows in the teens.

On Tuesday, highs will only recover into the mid 20s to near 30, with cold wind chill temperatures continuing. Wednesday morning could see another record low in the teens.
