The National Weather Service continues to issue a flood watch for all of southern Illinois, southwest Indiana, western Kentucky, and southeast Missouri through early Tuesday morning.

Additional rainfall amounts of one and a half to three inches are expected. Locally higher amounts will also be possible, especially over southern portions of southeast Missouri and western Kentucky. Rainfall rates have been light to moderate so far but rates should increase today into tonight.

With rivers already in flood, and most of our creeks, streams, and tributaries still at or near bankfull from recent rains, the already saturated soil conditions will allow any additional rainfall to run off and create additional flooding concerns.

While our main concern today is flooding of low-lying areas and quick rises in rivers and streams, there is a chance some locations could see flash flooding. The great risk of flash flooding would be across the southern parts of the Kentucky Purchase region into the Missouri Bootheel. Stay weather aware today.

River flooding will likely be prolonged, and possibly could worsen with time.
