Graves County's coroner is now the acting sheriff as well.

According to Graves County Judge-Executive Jesse Perry, state law says the county coroner is to serve as the acting sheriff until an active sheriff can be appointed. Perry says he has up to 30 days to make that appointment.

Perry's appointee will serve as acting sheriff until a special election is held to fill the permanent vacancy. That could happen as early as the May Primary Election, if not before.

Graves County Sheriff Dewayne Redmon passed away on Saturday at the age of 56. He had served as sheriff since 2011.
