Graves County Sheriff Jon Hayden said deputies received information Wednesday night from a concerned parent about some social media messages stating that a student was threatening to bring a gun to school. Deputies began investigating and conducted interviews with witnesses and the student suspect.
Following the investigation, a 14-year-old 8th grade boy was taken into custody and charged with 2nd degree terroristic threatening. Hayden said his office takes threats of all kinds very seriously.
“A lot of school age kids do not understand how dangerous it is to make comments, even in a jokingly manner due to tragedies that have occurred across the United States and beyond,” Hayden said. “We want parents and students to know that anytime you make any type of threat that it is going to be taken seriously and it's going to be investigated. If the threat or allegation is substantiated, you could be facing criminal charges.”
Hayden said the sheriff's office contacted Graves County school officials late Wednesday night after being made aware of the allegation.
