Rep. Richard Heath said he and his opponent in the Republican race for Agriculture Commissioner, Rep. Ryan Quarles, are asking for a re canvass of the votes in their primary election.

Heath said he called Quarles, and, "Because the vote is so close - we're less than a half a percent - we're going to do a re canvass."

The Associated Press reports both men got 50 percent of the vote, but Quarles received 92,391 votes to Heath's 91,585 - a difference of only 806 votes.

Heath said he knows that Jamie Comer is asking for a re-canvass in the Governor's primary, and it won't cost anything to check the Agriculture Commissioner's race at the same time.

Heath said, "I told Ryan that typically the re-canvass doesn't change the outcome, and if that's the case and he's still the winner, then I'll be supporting him in November, and supporting the Republican ticket."

Heath said he and Quarles entered the race as friends and they will remain friends, with the winner getting a pledge of support from the losing candidate.

Heath said the re-canvass could take up to ten days.
