The Educate to Career (ETC) group has ranked Murray State University as a tier 1 university.

The ETC is a nonprofit organization which was formed in 2013 with the goal of informing parents, educators, students, and others on the cost of college, career outcomes, and other important factors during the higher education planning process.

In their 2020 College Rankings, the ETC determined that Murray State University fit their qualifications of a top tier school. The newest rankings include an update for possible college students as they determine their education plans. To be considered a tier 1 university, educational institutions must provide the following:

1) A physical campus for in-classroom instruction.
2) Robust software and systems to support distance learning programs.
3) Faculty experience in teaching online.
4) Reasonable tuition and fees on a relative basis.

The ETC singled out Murray State for their commitment to offering everyone affordable, valuable degrees at a reasonable cost to transition them into a job market with high relative earnings. The ranking continued by praising the University's distance learning offerings as new students consider furthering their education online.

According to Murray State officials, MSU leads all other Kentucky universities in graduation rate and first to second-year retention for students based on data from 2018 and 2019. The university has also been consistently recognized by national publications for their award winning programs, campus life, safety initiatives, and overall values and quality.
