An assault suspect that was being sought by Mayfield police was found dead on Saturday.

According to the Graves County Sheriff's Office, 60-year-old Lowell Tommy Hunter Jr. of Mayfield was found inside a vehicle in a remote wooded area off of KY 339 in the Lowes community.

Hunter was pronounced dead at the scene by the Graves County Coroner, who determined that death was the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Hunter was being sought by the Mayfield Police Department regarding a recent stabbing. Mayfield Police Chief Nathan Kent said the stabbing took place in the 700 block of Anderson Street at 11:30 Thursday night. Officers said they found 57-year-old Walter Shelton, of Mayfield, with multiple stab wounds. He was taken by ambulance to Jackson Purchase Medical Center, then flown to an area trauma center for further treatment.
