A Mayfield man faces multiple charges, including child abandonment, following an incident on Tuesday.

According to the Mayfield Police Department, officers arrested 27-year-old James Edward Minton on a fugitive from justice warrant and criminal trespassing stemming from a warrant out of Illinois. As Minton was being placed in the patrol vehicle, he fled on foot.

Officers later found Minton at the Mayfield Garden Apartments. Upon taking Minton into custody, police learned that he had been babysitting his sister's children, and had left them in an apartment, and walked across town to see his ex-girlfriend.

According to police, the four children that were left unattended ranged in age from five months to nine years old. Minton was additionally charged with four counts of wanton endangerment, escape, fleeing or evading police on foot, theft by unlawful taking under $500 and four counts of abandonment of a minor.

Minton was lodged in the Graves County Jail.
