An officer responded to the area and observed a white van headed toward him. According to police, the van crossed the center double yellow line and nearly hit the officer, head on. The officer tried to stop the van, but the van continued for several blocks, crossing the center line before finally stopping near Poplar Street.
Police determined that the driver, 57-year-old Rodney Shepherd, was under the influence of alcohol. Shepherd was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving and possession of an open alcohol container in a motor vehicle.
