Police in Mayfield are searching for a man believed to be responsible for a stabbing Thursday night that left a man hospitalized.

Mayfield Police Chief Nathan Kent said the stabbing took place in the 700 block of Anderson Street at 11:30 pm. Officers said they found 57-year-old Walter Shelton, of Mayfield, with multiple stab wounds. He was taken by ambulance to Jackson Purchase Medical Center, then flown to an area trauma center for further treatment.

Kent said a 1st degree assault warrant has been obtained for the suspect, 60-year-old Lowell Hunter Jr. Police say Hunter fled the scene, and is believed to driving a silver 1993 Buick Century, with Kentucky registration plate 550-FLB.

Hunter is white, 6' 1” tall, 160 pounds, with gray hair and green eyes. Police say Hunter is known to have violent tendencies and should be considered dangerous.

Anyone with information on Hunter's whereabouts is asked to contact the Mayfield Police Department.
