After being shut down for nearly three years, Phoenix Paper Mill in Wickliffe has successfully restarted operations after reopening on Wednesday.

Once fully optimized, the mill will produce approximately 300,000 tons of product per year. Currently, Phoenix Paper employs approximately 224 individuals at the Wickliffe site.

The mill closed in the summer of 2016. In September of 2018, it became the first US paper mill to be purchased by Shanying International, one of the largest industrial papermaking enterprises in China.

“A lot of hard work by many people went into making this a safe and successful startup,” stated Craig Tatum, General Manager. “It is an honor to be a part of such a dedicated and committed team.”

“This is an exciting day for Phoenix Paper, the people of Ballard County, western Kentucky, and Shanying International,” stated Tom Lawson, Director of Strategy NA. “The restart of the Wickliffe Mill is the first step in our strategy of growth in North America.”
