The Murray Police Department has alerted everyone of an email scam that is going around.

Police say the email claims that the recipient has committed a traffic violation and must pay a fine within 72 hours. It states a specific violation, for example, “photo enforced red light violation”. It also list a city, state, and time when the "violation" occurred.

The sender then instructs the potential victim to pay the fine using an online link instead of U.S. Mail. The email also contains another online link for those who want to contest the citation.

Recent emails have been sent to multiple people indicating their violations were in Murray, but police say their agency does not utilize any type of traffic camera enforcement.

Any cameras used along Kentucky roads are for monitoring purposes only and Kentucky laws prohibit officers from ticketing drivers unless they see the violation first-hand.

Police say anyone who received a notice like this by email or regular mail should contact the law enforcement agency for that area. They remind everyone not to follow any links in a message like this, since citations are never sent using email.
