A Princeton woman facing a murder charge in the stabbing death of her former husband appeared in court on Wednesday.

Commonwealth's Attorney Carrie Ovey-Wiggins tells West Kentucky Star the prosecution offered 42-year-old Kimberly Smothers a plea deal in the case, which Smothers did not accept.

Smothers is charged with the Jan. 8 murder of 43-year-old Matt Smothers at a Ratliff Street home. A witness reported an argument at the home between the couple prior to the stabbing. Police said the argument escalated and Kimberly pulled a knife, stabbed Matt in the leg and fled the scene on foot. He later died at Caldwell County Medical Center.

Judge C.A. "Woody" Woodall set a pretrial conference for Sept. 1. If attorneys still have not reached a deal by then a trial date will be set.
