The annual Mayfield vs. Paducah Tilghman football game is Friday night but an incident at a junior varsity football game between the two schools has amped up the rivalry.

During Monday night's game, a Tilghman player was caught on video intentionally kicking a Mayfield player between the legs, sending him to the ground. The incident happened as the first half was coming to a close.

The officials apparently did not see the kick, thus no penalty against the Tilghman player. Joe Morris, who coaches Mayfield's varsity team, said none of his coaches saw the kick when it happened but were made aware of it when someone sent them the video.

“Sometimes players lose their heads and do stupid things,” Morris said. “I don't know why someone would do that. You don't want that in sports.”

Morris said Tilghman's coaches are aware of the incident and he's sure they will handle it accordingly. Attempts to reach Paducah Tilghman head football coach Kurt Barber and athletic director Kristopher Durfee have been unsuccessful.

Mayfield's JV team went on to win Monday night's game 28-12. The Cardinals and Blue Tornado varsity teams will square off Friday night at War Memorial Stadium in Mayfield.
