Lane restrictions on I-24's Tennessee River bridge are about to become a thing of the past, but not before some rolling road blocks this weekend.
On Saturday, drivers on I-24 east encountered rolling road blocks between 8:00 am and 3:00 pm. The gap in traffic from the rolling road block will allow workers to remove the work zone barrier wall. When they are finished, both eastbound lanes will be open for traffic for the first time in several months.
On Sunday, westbound lanes will have rolling road blocks between 8:00 am and 3:00 pm so the remaining barrier wall on that side of the bridge can also be removed.
While work this weekend will restore 2-lane travel in each direction, the work zone will remain in place for about another week or two. The contractor will then schedule some additional overnight closures to allow installation of water-proofing and drainage material around the new deck joints.
Due to the likelihood of traffic backups and possible delays during the rolling road blocks, local commuters should consider a detour along US 62 between Exit 27 and Exit 40 over the weekend.
