The body of an Illinois man was recovered from the Ohio River Friday afternoon below Smithland Locks and Dam in Livingston County.

The recovery comes one day after the boat he was in overturned at the dam.

A family member located the body of 46-year-old Christopher Shadowens of Herrin Illinois at around 2:45 p.m. The body of 60-year-old Kenneth Duncan of West Frankfort Illinois, was recovered Thursday.

Authorities say the initial investigation indicates that the men were fishing from an 18-foot Jon boat below the dam at around 11:30 a.m. on Thursday when the boat moved into one of the flood control gates. The gate was slightly open, which caused the water to become turbulent. The turbulent water reportedly battered the boat against the concrete.

Authorities believe the men tried unsuccessfully to get the boat out of the area, but the boat overturned. A witness had tried to save the men, but was unable to help before both men went under the surface.

The investigation by Kentucky Fish and Wildlife is ongoing.
