The Marshall County Sheriff's Office had a busy weekend with several arrests.

The office says it started on Friday just before 8 pm when deputies responded to a disturbance on Native Circle in Draffenville. Deputies say a fight had occurred and 40-year-old William L. Smith, of Benton was arrested and charged with 4th degree assault and booked into the Marshall County Detention Center.

On Saturday afternoon, deputies went to a single vehicle crash on Brewers Highway. Deputies say the vehicle had left the roadway at a bridge and had gone into the river.

Deputies allegedly noticed the smell of alcoholic beverages on the driver, and as a result of the investigation, 50-year-old Mark B. Mattheiss, of Benton, was charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs and license to be in possession. Mattheiss was transported to Marshall County Hospital by Marshall County EMS and as a result was issued a court date for his charges.

On Sunday, deputies arrested a Gilbertsville man on a DUI charge after a car crash at around 4:30 pm.  The crash happened on Greenapple Drive when 59-year-old Daryl Smith, of Gilbertsville, hit a mailbox and left the road.

Deputies say Smith was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs, leaving the scene of an accident, no operators license and failure to produce an insurance card.

Also on Sunday, at around 8 pm deputies arrested another man for DUI after a crash on Tatumsville Highway. Deputies say the driver of the vehicle, 60-year-old Terry Fields, of Gilbertsville, had backed out of a driveway, crossed the road, and went into a ditch on the opposite side. As Fields continued to try and get the vehicle out, another vehicle was passing by and was struck by Fields' vehicle.

Deputies say Fields was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs with aggravating circumstances and booked into the Marshall County Detention Center.
