Sheriff Investigating Poisoned Tobacco Field
By AP
MURRAY, KY - A western Kentucky sheriff is investigating who poisoned a recently planted tobacco field.

Calloway County Deputy Sheriff Gene Johnson told The Murray Ledger & Times that the 1 ½ acres were apparently sprayed with something potent, but he's unsure what the toxin was.

Johnson said he was alerted to the situation several days ago after an agriculture official determined the cause of death in a field owned by Smith Farms near Kirksey.

Johnson said he was told that Smith Farms had just finished the second day of planting in late May when the problem was noticed. He said indications are a piece of equipment was used in the process.

Johnson said a $5,000 reward is being offered by Smith Farms.
