Signal Upgrade Begins Today on US-45/KY-408
By West Kentucky Star Staff
VIOLA - Starting today, traffic signal upgrades will begin at the US 45/KY 408 intersection near Viola in Graves County. This intersection will be the first in the region to use a strobe during the red phase on the signal.

The contractor has started work along the right of way, and plans to ramp up work fairly quickly as weather allows this week.

The strobe upgrade will help with driver awareness on US 45, and the upgrade will also add double head red lights and a battery backup.

These upgrades are in addition to an existing Advance Warning Flasher to alert drivers when the signal is preparing to change from green to red phase.

Use caution when driving through the area with equipment and electrical personnel in and around the intersection over the next several weeks. During some of the required work, traffic through the intersection may be restricted to one lane. During periods when the signal has to be taken out of service to facilitate the work flaggers will control traffic through the intersection.

An analysis of police crash reports for this intersection over the last 5 years indicates 59 total crashes with 18 injury collisions, but no fatalities.  A significant number of crashes at the site were attributed to driver inattention.

This intersection of US 45/Paducah Road and KY 408/Viola-Pottsville Road near Fristoe’s Market is just south of the Kentucky State Police Post 1 Headquarters. Almost 13,000 vehicles pass through this intersection in an average day.
