The 2019 Penguin Project, "Grease - School Version," will open Friday at Playhouse in the Park in Murray.
Playhouse in the Park joined The Penguin Project in 2014 as the 7th theatre in the nation, and the first in Kentucky to participate in the program.

Speaking on the Greg Dunker Show, Lisa Cope explained how the program gives special needs children and young adults, ages 10 to 25, the opportunity to participate in the performing arts by being paired with a mentor to put on a full production.

The Penguin Project demonstrates that individuals with special needs are fully capable of participating in community activities with the same dedication and enthusiasm as others, when given the opportunity and support.

The origin of the name "Penguin Project" came about from the unique characteristics of penguins. They are extremely playful and curious, and they work well together. More importantly however, they have a "disability" that separates them from other birds in that they can't fly. Instead, penguins waddle and toboggan on their bellies over the snow, and are also excellent swimmers.

So, like the young artists in the Penguin Project, they have adapted to the challenges of their environment, and have not allowed their unique difference to interfere with their lives.

Performances will be Friday and Saturday evenings, September 20th, 21st, 27th, and 28th. Two Sunday matinee performances will be presented September 22nd and 29th.

Playhouse in the Park is located inside Central Park in Murray. Tickets can be purchased online at playhousemurray.org, or by calling the theatre at (270)-759-1752.

Cope suggests getting tickets early, as these performances tend to sell out, and purchasing tickets at the door is sometimes not possible.
