Two minor earthquakes shook the area Saturday.

A magnitude 2.5 quake epicentered in Carlisle County hit Saturday afternoon at 1:52 pm. According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake occurred about 5 miles west of Bardwell.

A magnitude 2.7 quake shook the ground near Ballard County Saturday morning at 11:31 am. According to the USGS, the quake occurred about 8 miles south of Wickliffe .


The tremor was the largest felt in western Kentucky so far in 2017, and the largest since a 3.5 magnitude tremor occurred last May along the Ohio River north of La Center.

The area is included in the northern portion of the New Madrid seismic zone.
