In an email released Tuesday, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet announced plans to repair the sinkhole that has formed along a frontage road just off US 641 near the Murray shopping center across from Roy Stewart Stadium.
Over the weekend someone had reported the hole about the size of a volleyball in the pavement at the entrance of a frontage road near Cracker Barrel. Murray Police investigated and determined there was a void beneath the pavement. The Murray Public Works Department closed the entrance pending further investigation.
Tuesday morning KYTC engineers conducted an inspection of the hole and found that it was around 20 feet below the pavement surface with a 40 foot diameter near the bottom, extending under the highway right of way and sidewalk.
Engineers believe a drainage pipe leak may have contributed to the creation of the sinkhole. Engineers are hoping to excavate the nearby drainage pipe as early as Wednesday. Depending on what is discovered, crews may be working on the area most of the week.
