A contractor working with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's Lyon County Highway Maintenance Crew has continued to make good progress clearing dirt from a hillside along KY 93 South of Eddyville where a landslide threatened the road early this year.
The effort to stabilize the hillside has required trucks moving in and out of the work zone along KY 93 near the 10 mile marker between Palisades Drive and Lisanby Road in the Eddy Creek area.
This slide developed during February and March when KYTC personnel noticed an embankment starting to slip. Engineers believe the land slippage along several hundred feet of hillside is most likely due to extensive periods of freezing and thawing through the winter months, as well as wet weather this spring.
The contractor has completed removal of a substantial amount of dirt from the hillside and has started covering part of the area with topsoil so it can be reseeded. At this time, KYTC engineers believe they have about another month of work to complete the stabilization effort.
A major portion of the work has been completed off the roadway without interrupting traffic. However, a lane has been required along the work zone in recent weeks to assist trucks hauling excess material away from the site.
Drivers traveling KY 93 are asked to continue to be alert for one-lane traffic with flaggers controlling alternating flow. Trucks are expected to continue hauling material from the site anytime weather allows through the month of September.
Pollard and Sons Excavating of Madisonville is the contractor on the slide repair project.
