South Fulton’s city manager was arrested and jailed in Obion County on Monday, after two alleged attempts to pass a counterfeit bill this past weekend.

KYTN reports that Union City Police Chief Perry Barfield said that 34-year-old James Denton Gray, of Union City, was taken into custody on charges of felony criminal simulation.

Barfield said the charges were issued after Gray reportedly attempted to pass a bogus $100 bill for merchandise at Big Lots in Union City.

After clerks at Big Lots informed Gray that the bill was counterfeit, Chief Barfield said he then attempted to use it again at Wal-Mart in Union City.

Wal-Mart officials contacted police concerning the bogus bill, with Gray reportedly telling different stories of how he obtained it.

Gray recently resigned his position as city manager with the City of Hickman, and had been in the South Fulton position for about two weeks.

He also serves as an elected county commissioner in Obion County.
