Fort Campbell military personnel were called to help dispose of a 75-year-old mortar round found near Nashville on Monday.

The Lebanon, TN, police department reported on their Facebook page that a person using a metal detector behind Hartman Plantation came across the mortar round. That area had been used as training grounds for troops during WWII.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol sent a bomb tech liaison, along with Fort Campbell representatives to confirm it was indeed a live mortar round.

The mortar was considered to be too unstable to move a long distance, so it was moved to a nearby safe area and detonated. The blast was heard from a distance, which caused alarm for some local residents.

The area was searched for other mortars before the scene was deemed safe.
