Waffle House has announced it has closed 365 of its restaurants across the nation to help combat the spread of the novel coronavirus.

The closures represent a significant portion of the chain's 1,992 locations, and include locations in western Kentucky. A store employee confirmed the Lone Oak Road location in Paducah will continue to provide carry-out service only.

In a March 15 statement, the restaurant chain said it would try to keep its nearly 45,000 employees working by remaining open whenever possible, adding that it has implemented new cleaning policies at its locations that remain open to minimize the potential spread of the virus.

It is rare for Waffle House to shut down its stores, even in times of emergency. So rare in fact that the Federal Emergency Management Agency uses an informal metric known the "Waffle House Index", to determine the effect and scale of a natural disaster on a community.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear recently banned all dine in service at restaurants throughout the state, joining several other cities and states in an effort to slow the spread of the virus.
