The Union City Police Department is warning residents of west Tennessee and western Kentucky of a new scam.

According to KYTN, a Union City resident received a phone call Wednesday from someone that said they were with the Obion County Grand Jury.

The caller stated that a local judge had issued an arrest warrant for them due to a missed court date.

The scammer then said the victim could pay $8,000 to the court system and avoid being arrested.

When the victim explained that they did not have that amount of money, the caller then said a partial payment of $1,000 would avoid jail time.

At this point, the victim agreed to pay the lower amount, which they were instructed by the caller to use a Bitcoin kiosk to complete the transaction.

Residents are reminded that notifications of outstanding warrants or citations are not made by telephone.

Also, in Obion County, the court does not use Bitcoin, Venmo, or any other form of e-currency.
