A man accused of murdering two Murray women in February was in court on Friday.

The Calloway County Circuit Court Clerk says 51-year-old Shannon Scott appeared before Special Judge Tim Kaltenbach. He faces two charges of murder along with 2nd degree cruelty to animals, 1st degree burglary, tampering with evidence and theft by unlawful taking.

Kaltenbach ruled on a defense motion, saying that Scott must undergo a competency hearing on April 30 to determine if he is fit to stand trial.

The charges stem from events on February 7, when police say Scott forced his way into the Catalina Drive home where his girlfriend, 37-year-old Tera Todd, lived with and cared for of 77-year-old Evelyn Scott. Police believe Shannon Scott stabbed Todd several times, then slit Evelyn Scott's throat and strangled her small dog. Todd reportedly fled the home to get help and was found dead outside a neighbor's garage.

Kaltenbach was appointed to handle this case after Calloway Circuit Judge Jamie Jameson recused himself. He said there was a conflict of interest.
