PADUCAH, KY - A Paducah nurse was among those honored in Frankfort for contributions in combating sexual assault.

Kristy Schwetman, an emergency room nurse at Lourdes Hospital, was presented an award for her work as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) at the 13th annual Sexual Assault Awareness & Prevention Month Awards at the Capital Plaza Hotel Thursday night.

Schwetman began working at Lourdes in 1993 and was certified as a SANE in 2001. For a time, Schwetman was the only SANE at Lourdes and committed herself to being on call 24/7 for victims of sexual violence.

In addition, Schwetman is also a member of the Purchase Area Sexual Assault and Child Advocacy Center as well as the McCracken County Sexual Assault Response Team. She also works with area hospitals in sexual assault nursing training.

Earlier in the day, Schwetman and other award winners were recognized during a ceremony inside the Capital Rotunda to kick off Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month in Kentucky.
